What if an object could both capture carbon from our atmosphere and act as a visual inspiration? What if we created an infrastructure that helps to improve the health of our immediate environment while also seamlessly blending into it?

These are just a couple of the questions that the MSP team asked during the development and design of these DAC (direct air-capture) concepts.

Using a methodology pioneered by Klaus Lackner, director of ASU’s Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, these monolithic DAC objects combine form and function to deliver an object of admiration rather than an infrastructural eyesore.

	Living Picture

Role: Associate Lead DesignerCuratorial team: UAPBuild: UAPClient: KaidaLocation: Dongguan, ChinaYear: 2018Elena Manferdini’s work spans architecture, art, and design. Manferdini was commissioned to create multiple artworks, including two architectural interventions, a large glass appliqué graphic, and an immersive site-specific artwork for the corridor area within the Kaida Technology and Design Centre in Dongguan, China.

Referencing the surrounding ecological environment, the installation titled Living Picture connects the architecture of the site and the public space, paying homage to the natural world via hyper-realistic depictions of nature contrasted with geometric patterning.

UAP worked with Manferdini to develop and deliver the 5.5-meter tall artwork which transforms the connective corridor space into an immersive and interactive environment. The graphic upper portion is comprised of a fixed metal tile mosaic, while the lower portion is an interactive kinetic screen, composed of 1700 rotating colored and mirrored blocks that encourage the spectator to physically engage and manipulate the artwork.

	One Museum Place

Role: Associate Lead DesignerCuratorial team: UAP
Build: UAPClient: HinesLocation: Shanghai, ChinaYear: 2019
A landmark development for Hines Asia in Shanghai, UAP worked with 1MP to vision, curate, design, develop and install a collection of artworks in the downtown business district of Jing’an in Shanghai, China.

Under the Guiding Vision of Reflect/Reinvent, the curatorial narrative for Hines One Museum Place takes inspiration from the vitality and place story of Shanghai’s historic JingAn District. Long celebrated as the cultural core of Shanghai, visioning revolved around the immersive
journey through time and place; from Shikumen to Sculpture Park and finally to the One Museum Place development.

In Jingan, the connection to heritage is tangible. Created and nurtured by the stories and ideas of those that have lived and journeyed through it, collectively and perpetually giving it new life, anima, and character; a timeless evolving narrative. While maintaining the city’s vast memory
and consciousness, JingAn also embodies a new bold, polished Shanghai. The public art collection for Hines One Museum Place seeks to visually illustrate that these walls between past and present are porous.

Reflect/Reinvent inspires a site-wide vision for Museum Place, in which contemporary art interventions are imagined to define the district, as well as complement the pioneering spirit of Hines as a key player in its growth. Through the curation of a strong regional artist selection, artistic interventions become a visual reflector of place, curated and culturally relevant for an iconic Shanghai locale.

Build: UAPClient: SIICLocation: Qingdao, ChinaYear: 2018

While working with UAP, Andrew Furmanski led the design, fabrication, and installation of Emergence: an arching, brass entry canopy for a landmark civic development in Qingdao, China.

Starting with the bones of the work: the painted Q235B steel structure is an accomplishment of engineering. Measuring just 0.6x1M at the base, the canopy expands to an 8x19M soffit, revealing dramatic arches and generous architectural space. Standing at over 14M tall, the canopy emerges from the ground plane and soars above pedestrians, Andrew honored the vision of the client by successfully reflecting the soaring
vision of the development. In total, over 850 brass panels are held in place by a clever stud and bracket substructure. And at night, the canopy’s surface, perforated by internal lighting, creates the illusion of shimmering lights on the nearby surface of the surrounding coast.

Shortlisted: 2018 Metal in Architecture Award from

16 Tech Innovation District

Role: Senior Designer/Design SupportDesign: MSPClient: 16 Tech Innovation District, City of IndianapolisLocation: Indianapolis, USAYear: 2021
The 16 Tech Innovation District is an urban innovation district being developed in the historic Riverside neighborhood of Indianapolis. MSP joined with SBP to design a new bridge spanning Fall Creek, linking the District with downtown Indy. MSP also led an entrance study, examining opportunities to enrich, connect to, and welcome neighbors through new public spaces.MSP worked with 16 Tech to design entrances that would promote an open and porous border between 16 Tech and the historic neighborhood it is part of. Conceiving each entry as a node, amenity spaces that connect 16 Tech with its surrounding community, these entrances become neighborhood assets, providing a variety of services, connections, and activities for the use and enjoyment of the broader community. These entry nodes build off of 16 Tech’s planned public realm framework, established by the 2019 Masterplan. By carefully locating each node, they simultaneously pull visitors into The Central Green, the heart of the district, while also connecting outward to the broader Indy community.

MSP worked hand-in-hand with People for Urban Progress (PUP) and 16 Tech’s community engagement team, developing content for and participating in a series of events that promoted community voices to influence the design and strategies for advancing 16 Tech’s new bridge and open space network.

Qingdao
Role: Senior DesignerDesign: IMG3Client: Qingdao GovernmentLocation: Qingdao, ChinaYear: 2016
In 2012 the Dalian Wanda Group announced that it had struck a deal to buy the American cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings. At the time, this piece of news seemed inconsequential. However, two years later the
Wanda Development Group would approach IMG3 with a project that could have never seemed possible: “Movie Metropolis,” a new
entertainment district, a new island off the coast of Qingdao, recreational facilities, hotels, resorts, apartments, parks, and much, much more. All in all, an entirely new city district of Qingdao was built to rival the prestige and cultural entertainment capabilities of Hollywood.

Needless to say, there were thousands of people working on this project to make it a reality. Andrew’s role in this project varied. For the resorts and commercial developments, he was in charge of cultural elements, design, and communication with the client architect. For the waterfront and marina club, he conceptualized with the team, designing, and creating pieces that would eventually become part of the built design.

Man, Machine, Marine
Role: StudentClient: University of GeorgiaLocation: San Franciso, USAYear: 2011
The goal of this senior project was to approach design in an extremely creative, innovative, and cutting-edge fashion while respecting the historic character and use of the site.

Key fractal geometries allow not only interesting forms but increase the site’s permeability. Preservation of historic buildings and implementation of contrasting building and public space geometries creates an energizing and intriguing conflict of forces.

Leftover spaces between key geometries and the site’s existing buildings act as environmental infrastructure; collecting the site’s surface water to filter it through planting before returning it cleaner to the greater bay.

It is this tension and energy between old/new, formal/informal that allows for the site to be a successful and exciting proposal for the San Francisco Bay coastline.

Eye of Infinity
Role: Associate Lead DesignerArtist: Lindy Lee
Curator/Build: UAP
Client: Hong Kong Peak TramLocation: Hong Kong
Year: 2022
Lindy Lee is an Australian artist whose practice explores her Chinese ancestry through Taoism and Ch'an (Zen) Buddhism – philosophies that see humanity and nature as inextricably linked. Her artwork embodies the intimate connections between human existence and the cosmos. It highlights the vastness of space and invites curiosity.

With its central void, the Eye of Infinity's form conjures poetic associations of seed, portal, and eye. The 'seed' speaks of germination and growth - of the saplings growing to reach the sky. The seed is an auspicious symbol and a deliberate reference to the abundant mountain forestry and country parks that Hong Kong is deservedly proud of. A 'portal' is a threshold – a transitional space that leads from one place to another. The Peak Tram is, in essence, a portal that facilitates the transition from sea level to summit. Finally, the 'eye' references more lyrical notions of the gaze. People travel to high places to experience and be inspired by a direct and personal relationship with a vastness that contains all in front of and beyond the horizon.

"The psyche of Hong Kong is one of ascension. The Peak is one of Hong Kong's ultimate summits offering one of the world's most sublime vistas of city, sea and sky. This spirit of ascension inspires the Eye of Infinity. No city on the planet embodies the intimate connection between heaven and earth, sea and sky, as Hong Kong does." - Lindy Lee

The Eye of Infinity's torus form has been elongated to become an oval shape with the void in the centre. It is made from cast bronze with a black patina finish and has been crafted with thirty-five thousand tiny, drilled apertures to allow light to sparkle through. The internal lighting will change throughout the day to reflect the changing light of the Peak and the daylight transitioning to evening, as well as growing in lighting intensity to signal the approaching arrival of the Peak Tram to the Central Terminus.

UAP worked closely with Lindy Lee and her studio team based outside Byron Bay, Australia, and art consultants Art Partners-, from the concept generation for both the artwork and landscape design, through to the technical design development phase to the production and final installation of the piece. This monumental sculpture was cast in bronze using a sand-casting technique, and the varied and complex elements of the artwork were assembled, finished, and patinated, all in close coordination with the artist over a period of almost three years.
